리브 타일러는 나긋나긋한 몸에 가죽 재킷을 두르고 있었다. 스타배우이자 영화제작자인 리브 타일러는 자신의 뒤에 놓인 벨스타프의 무드보드에 붙어있는 사진 속 밀리터리 의상보다 좀더 페미닌하면서 관능적으로 의상을 소화했다.

사진 속 용감무쌍한 여성들은 분명 아버지나 남자친구의 코트를 빌려 입었을 터였고, 이는 터프함을 책임지고 있는 패션하우스에 걸맞는 거였다.

“내가 만들고 싶은 재킷은 마치 내 살갗과 같이 완전히 피트 되는 거에요. 매우 섹시하면서 매우 여성스러운 모양을 원한답니다.” 벨스타프 디자이너 델펀 니노우와의 컬래버레이션을 통해 캡슐 컬렉션을 선보이는 리브 타일러가 말했다.

리브와 벨스타프의 인연은 지난 해 시작됐다. 리브 타일러는 벨스타프가 제작하고 데이비드 베컴과 할리우드의 전설 하비 케이틀이 출연하는 영화 <아웃로스(The Outlaws)>의 제작총책임을 맡았었다.

런던에 위치한 벨스타프 작업실에서 리브와 델펀이 함께 일하는 모습을 보다가 나는 리브가 말 그대로 부츠 한 짝을 잡아당기면서 “발목 둘레가 너무 두껍다”고 평하는 장면을 목격했다. 그리고 나서 리브는 좀더 터프한 아우터 류에 집어넣기로 한 카멜색 코트를 걸쳐보았다. 이번 캡슐 컬렉션은 상대적으로 덜 유명한 벨스타프의 여성복 라인에 대한 흥미를 불러일으키기 위해 2016년도 겨울 공개될 예정이다.

“많은 부분이 이상적인 아이템에 대해 나눈 이야기로부터 나왔죠. 코트와 재킷, 그리고 내 뜻대로 표현할 수 있는 다양한 작은 아이템들 말이에요.” 10대 시절 모델로 시작해 1996년 베르나르도 베르톨루치의 <미녀 훔치기>에서 이름을 알린 38세의 리브 타일러가 말했다.

패션에 대한 이러한 새로운 기여는 뉴욕 워킹맘으로서 살고있는 리브의 개인적인 경험에서 어느정도 비롯되었다. 리브에겐 10살과 9개월 된 두 아들이 있다.

리브는 그녀와 델펀이 “우리가 여러 시대를 거쳐 사랑했던 것들의 이미지와 함께 당신이 남자친구나 아버지의 코트를 집어 들었을 때 이를 어떻게 유니섹스적으로 소화할 수 있는지를 살펴보았다”고 설명했다.

이러한 아이디어는 그녀의 그 유명한 아버지에게서 온 것일까? 70년대를 풍미했던 록 그룹 에어로스미스의 스티븐 타일러 말이다.

“나는 아빠가 가죽재킷을 입은 모습을 본 적이 없어요. 아빠가 입으면 좋겠지만, 늘 스웨이드 재킷을 입죠! 가죽재킷에 대해 생각하자면, 마치 <그리스>에서처럼 50년대의 이미지에요.” 리브가 말했다.

벨스타프의 CEO인 개빈 헤이그는 벨스타프 여성복에 있어서 리브의 역할은 개인적이면서도 글로벌적인 포커스가 될 거라 보고 있다.

“리브의 스타일은 독창적이면서도 클래식해요. 엣지가 있지요. 그리고 자유와 모험의 정신도 가졌어요.” 헤이그의 말이다.

날렵하게 재단된 부드러운 가죽재킷, 또는 검은색 버튼과 가죽 파이핑이 들어간 밀리터리 코트, 심지어 가죽재킷과 레이어드 된 무톤 베스트에 이르기까지 디자이너 델펀이 바로 리브의 열망을 현실로 바꿔놓을 수 있는 이라는 데에는 의심의 여지가 없다.

그러나 델펀은 이번 캡슐 컬렉션은 단순한 패션보다 더 많은 의미를 가지고 있다고 열렬히 설명했다. “물론 스타일을 가져왔다는 점에서 가장 유용했어요. 그러나 방수 패브릭이라던지 캐시미어 등을 도입하게 된 건 벨스타프에 있어서 정말 중요해요. 저는 기능성을 위해 스타일을 타협하지 않아요. 이 둘을 조화롭게 만드는 것이 중요하죠.”

리브는 뉴욕의 매서운 추위를 가정하며 이를 인정했다. “패션은 종종 사라져버리게 돼요. 아침에 걸어서 아이를 학교에 데려다 줄 때면 살이 에일 정도로 춥기 때문에 엄청나게 따뜻한 걸 입거나 겹겹이 껴입고 두꺼운 스카프에 모자까지 써야하죠.”

아시아와 유럽, 그리고 전 세계로 뻗어나가고 있는 벨스타프의 여성 홍보대사로서 리브 타일러는 어떻게 옷들을 스타일리쉬하면서도 국제적으로 통할 수 있도록 만들게 될까?

“저는 정말 얇고 신축성 있는 재킷을 원해요. 쉬폰 드레스 위에 걸쳐 입을 수 있게 말이죠. 전 매일 가죽재킷을 입지는 않아요. 그렇게 자주 모험을 떠나는 건 아니라고요!” 리브가 말했다.

Liv Tyler Goes From Rock To A Soft Place At Belstaff

Liv Tyler wrapped a leather jacket around her lithe body. The filmstar and producer produced a look that was more feminine and more sensual than the military clothes pictured on the Belstaff mood board behind her.

Those were images of intrepid women who had apparently borrowed their fathers’ or boyfriends’ coats – as befits a fashion house on the tough side.

“The jacket that I want to create is very fitted, almost like a second skin. I want the shape to be very sexy and very feminine,” said Liv, who has collaborated with Belstaff designer Delphine Ninous on a capsule collection.

Liv’s connection with Belstaff started last year when she was executive producer of the fashion company’s movie The Outlaws, starring David Beckham and a cast that included Hollywood legend Harvey Keitel.

Watching her at work with Delphine in Belstaff’s London premises, I saw that Liv was hands on (literally), tugging on a boot and judging it “too chunky round the ankle”. She then slipped on a camel coat that she had added to the range of tougher outerwear. This capsule women’s collection will be in stores for winter 2016, as a way of generating interest in Belstaff’s lesser-known women’s line.

“A lot of it came from us talking about ideal pieces: a coat, a jacket and different little pieces that could express my version of them,” said Liv, 38, who started as a teenage model and made her name in film with Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty in 1996.

The new fashion contribution comes partly from her personal experience of her own life as a New York working mother, who has two sons, aged 10 and nine months.

Liv explained that she and Delphine “looked at images of things we loved throughout history, and how it can be unisex when you grab your boyfriend’s or your father’s coat.”

Did that idea come from her famous father – Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, the rock group that made its name in the Seventies?

“I’ve never seen my dad in a leather jacket – I wish he would, but he wears suede jackets!” said Liv. “When I think of leather, it is the Fifties images, like Grease.”

Gavin Haig, CEO of Belstaff, sees Liv’s role as both personal and as a global focus for Belstaff womenswear.

“Liv has her own individual, classic style with an edge – and a spirit of freedom and adventure,” said Haig.

There is no doubt that designer Delphine is the one who turns into reality Liv’s desire for a softer leather jacket with a narrow cut, or a military coat with black buttons and leather piping, or even a shearling vest layered with the leather jacket.

But Delphine was eager to explain that this capsule collection is much more than just a dose of fashion: “It’s definitely useful to bring style – but also to bring water-resistant fabrics, even cashmere, is something that is very important to Belstaff.

“I don’t compromise the style for the functionality – it’s important that we combine the two,” Delphine continued.

Liv admitted that in the deep freeze of a New York winter, “fashion sometimes goes out of the window.

“When I’m walking my kid to school in the morning, because it’s so painfully cold, you need something very warm or lots of layers, thick scarves and hats,” she said.

As female ambassador for Belstaff, with its reach across Asia, Europe and beyond, how is Liv going to wear the clothes to make them stylish and internationally relevant?

“I want the jacket to be very thin and stretchy – to be able to throw it on over a chiffony dress,” she said. “I don’t really wear leather jackets every day – I don’t have quite that much adventure!”
