Donatella Versace & Anthony Vaccarello Interview

Donatella Versace stood under the peeling ceiling of a broken-down building in London’s gritty East End looking right at home. Which was surprising, because the week before I had seen her in New York in black mesh with scarlet Chinese symbol. Beside her was Jennifer Lopez dressed for the Met Ball in a whiff of black chiffon handworked with lacquer-red beading.

This time around, Donatella was with Anthony Vaccarello, the Paris-based designer of body-conscious clothes who is now the official creative director of Versus – the line that Donatella set up in 1989 as a cool, clubby collection complementary to big brother Gianni’s brand.

“My baby!” said Donatella, explaining her emotional attachment to Versus, which was reinvigorated, first by Christopher Kane and then by fellow British designer Jonathan Anderson.

But this time, not only the designer but the process of showing and selling has been revitalised for the digital world.

“It is a radical change for us to do a collection this way,” said Donatella, explaining that the ” how” would go live that evening online – and that the clothes themselves would be available from the following morning on Versusversace.com.

“Doing a collection full of character, strong and fearless, like Anthony is doing, needs to be presented in the same way. It should be fearless and daring. A radical new change.”

Anthony Vaccarello, 35, agrees with this 21st-century digital-media approach.

“I think it will become more and more like this now, to present in this way,” he said as we sat on a retro-glam mustard velvet sofa in the decayed building. “It is super new, but I think is something that will stay. The idea of presenting something and then being able to buy it.”

A variety of brands from Burberry to Topshop has done some degree of instant sales.

But this time, it is the whole Versus collection – from a tailored sleeveless coat with lion-head studs (£765) to a leather zippered mini skirt (£610). Most of the clothes seemed to fit with each other for a personalised choice.

“I think he has made a great collection. There are many ways to look at the collection, because there are many ways to present this collection,” said Donatella. “If you see it on the internet, you want it now. I don’t want to wait forever for this to turn up in store.”

Anthony took me into the dilapidated former brewery, transformed into a Nineties warehouse rave party scene. On the walls were powerful black and white images of the clothes worn by groovy girls and guys.

“I really wanted to work with the photographer Collier Schorr this season – you can see big prints of the work we did with her,” Anthony said. “We really wanted to instil a new image of Versus, to do that it is good to have big pictures to help people understand.”

Looking at a chic kilt skirt that looked like a Parisian gesture from the Italian/Belgian Vaccarello, I was intrigued to understand how Anthony and Donatella worked together.

“When you are working with true artists, you have to let them free,” she said. “Anthony comes up with a good idea, but we prefer to do research for him. But usually he arrives with everything, and I have never seen anyone work as fast as he does. When he starts he can’t stop!”

Anthony’s version of the working relations?

“It is more like a conversation we have had since the beginning,” Vaccarello said. “Then at every meeting in Milan we speak together and I share ideas and ask, ‘What do you think about that?’ We have never disagreed so far!”

Donatella sums up the relationship she tries to have when she brings fresh, young talent to Versus. A diva in her Met Ball dress, she is a glam businesswoman in the black Versus/Vaccarello one-arm asymmetric dress (yours for £665 online).

“My idea is only that I need to recognise the talent in other people,” Donatella said to Anthony. “I don’t want someone who will just give me what I like and whatever I want, that is stupid. I want to learn something from you.”
