    Jason Wu

    Coach

    Wes Gordon

    Alexander Wang

    Altuzarra

    Prabal Gurung

    Ralph Rucci

    Lacoste

    Dion Lee

    Edun

    Opening Ceremony

    Versus

    Victoria Beckham

    Diane von Furstenberg

Parole!’

New York Fashion Week: Day One BY SUZY MENKES

Suzy Menkes reports from the Jason Wu, Coach and Wes Gordon shows at New York Fashion Week

    Jason Wu S/S 2015

As the New York collections open the international fashion season, one special date is marked on the global calendar of cool.

No, it is not the latest looks from Marc Jacobs or Rodarte. Another company has grabbed the attention as an online digital clock marks the hours, minutes and seconds to next Tuesday, 9 September at 10am Californian time.

The promise of a new, and so far unknown, product from Apple seems likely to have far more impact among the fashionable than the latest looks from the catwalk.

When we think of how smartphones have transformed fashion and its reporting, from selfies to bloggers to instant on-line shoppers, any digital invention is likely to have an impact beyond a single designer’s show.

From a retail perspective, cyber selling has invaded bricks-and-mortar stores. And some designers are embracing the future, from Ralph Lauren’s wearable technology Polo Tech shirts, through Tory Burch’s digital wristbands for Fitbit.

In a more terrestrial world, it is the designers who are making news. Jason Wu announced on Friday that he had sold a controlling stake in his fashion business to investment company InterLuxe.

“I’ve been eight years in business and I’m with a great partner I trust,’’ he said, discussing the investment in his company while standing backstage amid his sporty-de-luxe collection.

The models were surrounded by the first fruits of the collaboration: bags inspired by Jason’s friend, the actress Diane Kruger.

After starting his career with traditional but youthful uptown clothes, which caught the eye of his now-favourite customer, First Lady Michelle Obama, Jason stepped out of the city. For summer 2015, the collection was rooted in American sportswear.

The effect was noble, with some mature models wearing with great style the opening leaf-patterned tailored outfits.

I liked the mix of sporty looks and fine fabrics – a simple dress made in suede or a T-shirt in lace. When the show moved on to evening looks, there was shimmering silver, more modern than the cutaway backs held together on a fabric shoestring.

It was a good collection, showing Jason moving forward seamlessly in the direction of traditional American style in the sporty stride of Bill Blass or Michael Kors.

Yet something was missing. In this digital age, there was not a whisper of the fabrics that have transformed sportswear: breathable materials, smart treatments, infinite stretch…

Now that he has the investment as well as the design energy, it would be good to see Jason making a collection that is not just haute, but reaches out to the unknown.

    Coach S/S 2015

Coach is taking the fast lane to fashion. Designer Stuart Vevers took the super-cool Route 66, using a collaboration with Californian artist-animator Gary Baseman, who produced little creatures to illuminate fabrics and dress up Coach’s famous bags.

It reminded me of Japanese designer Takashi Murakami’s collaboration with Louis Vuitton, which started in 2002. But Stuart’s way of mixing fake fur in pastel colours with the same shades for 1960s-style leather shoes and bags was a good meld of fake and fun.

    Wes Gordon S/S 2015

“I’m 28 going on 78!’ said Wes Gordon, looking cool in a tailored suit and white shirt as he sent out into New York’s sweaty September heat his collection for summer 2015.

In his comment about age, the designer was referring to a certain grace and restraint which was his refreshing way of stopping the recent flow of fashion vulgarity.

A v-shaped jacket over narrow pants, slim, calf-length dresses, cut in an un-showy way and presented with flat shoes, all suggested a soft take on modernism.

I don’t know if his background in America’s South – he is a son of Atlanta, Georgia – has given Wes a particular spirit, respectful to women.

He might have been inspired by earlier internships with Tom Ford and Oscar de la Renta. He may have learned from studying fashion at Central Saint Martin’s in London to pull out the essence of his southern self.

The result, expressing womanhood oh-so-lightly, was presented in a subtle choice of fabrics –especially lace – and in colour.

Even after a couple of summers of macaroon pastels, his current mixes of blush pink, powder blue and a dash of pale green made for a collection that was womanly – but not too obviously ‘pretty’. Even a flash of silver, say, at the shoulders of a sweater, was subtle.

The programme notes listed fine fabrics. They made the Wes Gordon look classy and never brassy.

New York Fashion Week: Day Two BY SUZY MENKES

Suzy Menkes reports from the Ralph Rucci, Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra and Alexander Wang shows.

    Alexander Wang is Fetishising Sneakers

Rihanna was in the front row taping her tomato-red platform shoes, her blue Alexander Wang outfit rising so high up her bronzed legs that the hem was not too far from her matching hat.

And the music artist was one of the first to jump up as her favourite designer took his bow.

“It’s all about fetishising sneakers,” said Wang backstage, to explain the kernel of a collection that was focused on sportswear, raised to a high level of elegance and energy – with his signature sneaker patterns and lace-up fastenings on dynamic clothes.

“Sneakers are everyone’s obsession, so I thought, ‘why not do a show based on all the iconic pieces that I grew up with and speak to my generation?’” said the designer, explaining that these elements were worked in an artisanal way.

The result was an imaginative blend of what Wang does: the sporty energy and forward-thinking fabrics of his eponymous line, and the couture elegance he has learnt in his role at Balenciaga in Paris.

That meant graceful ankle-length dresses – still in sportswear fabrics – interspersed with the sneaker-inspired pieces.

Last season Wang played fashion games with clothes that changed colour according to body temperature. For summer 2015, he absorbed vivid colour into the collection, including weaves of red, white and blue for a bustier top, or vivid Nike-bright shades used for cute stretch dresses with short skirts.

Significantly, the models’ feet were not in those sneakers that gave a fillip to Chanel haute couture. Instead the shoes were walkable high heels.

Wang’s great strength is the energy that he gets into his collections. It was as though the laced-shoe images might burst open at the midriff, or the twisted shoelace effect on the chest stretch open.

But Wang has learnt a lot about fashion and how to temper the pace of a show since he started nine years ago. A soft, cloud grey was interspersed with the bright and cheery sneaker colours, making the clothes seem like a range suited to many generations.

This collection was important because the designer showed his rapid and dynamic fashion maturity – and also fed into American sportswear, which has suffered recently from a fading image.

It is hard to imagine how Wang can be so productive that he is able to cross continents, from New York to Paris to China. I guess he must just keep running on a pair of magic sneakers.

    Prettiness All Undone by Altuzarra

“Undone – and very sensual,” said Joseph Altuzarra to sum up his powerful collection that took the prim, womanly look of the early 1960s and had it literally undone.

To the music from the 1968 movie Rosemary's Baby, the models walked out in pretty pink gingham checks – slim dresses or tailored shorts worn with clearly bare breasts underneath.

The mix of innocence and lust sent out a strong message with a whiff of decadence – but with perfectly lovely clothes.

Rosemary's Baby, Barry Lyndon – it’s the idea of a sinister and undone prettiness and romance; ill-fated, doomed love,” said the designer. Yet this gripping collection never seemed overwrought.

It opened with the denim used for sharply tailored pieces, the Princess Grace up-do as prim as could be, whether with a fine gauge sweater with shirt and skirt, or a dress that opened subtly to the thighs.

To checks were added stripes, cut precisely in blocks at different angles, whereas a ginger leather belt or soft suede jacket toyed with sensuality, grounded by a North African vibe.

The collection had clearly drawn sections, which seemed to become more intensely fetishistic as a lattice of leather caged the body, or when pearls edged black lace dresses – again mixing the new and the romantic.

In London, Christopher Kane has played with the innocence/sexuality of gingham, and Simone Rocha has made pearl edging her signature.

But Altuzarra made this collection his own, adding Barry Lyndon historicism in a romantic way. It was a long stride from the sportswear revival of the current Summer 2015 season, but diversity is the spice of fashion – and this was a compelling show.

    Prabal Gurung S/S 2015

For a second season Prabal Gurung turned to his ethnic origins. But this time, it was his childhood memories of Nepal – especially spring beneath the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas – that whetted his fashion appetite.

“Vibrant lush hillsides dotted with wild roses and rhododendrons,” said Prabal, explaining the serenity and spirituality of his childhood home.

The show started true to that spirit with denim softened by a waft of chiffon, and an organza blouse dressed with another airy drape. There was a feeling of mountain flowers in the soft colours, and the overall effect was sporty prettiness.

But Prabal, who had recently left behind the complexity of some of his early collections, seems to have re-embraced complicated design. A flow of frills at the neck and the skirt of a dress that already had floral patterns meant there was a lot going on.

As with so many designers, the collection needed editing; a way to display the clothes with the beauty of simplicity, catching the essence of Prabal's vision: the juxtaposition of American sportswear with his Nepalese heritage.

Ralph Rucci: America’s National Fashion Treasure

“I loved it,” said Padma Lakshmi, wearing a slip of a blue silk dress, as she hugged Ralph Rucci after his exceptional collection.

The designer, whose coterie of adoring clients filled his book-laden, glass-fronted studio, deserves to be labelled ‘American Fashion’s National Treasure’. For his clothes are the nearest New York gets to the elegance of haute couture.

From the white trapeze top, skirting the body, to the grand ‘Infanta’ dress in duchesse satin that closed the show, this was a tour de force.

Intriguingly, Ralph Rucci wrote his thoughts at length in the programme notes – turning his collection inside out, as it were. He talked about the “balance” of clothes, as the trapeze top formed a triangle above narrow pants.

Then there was a technique he took from his own haute couture: tubes resting on a bed of tulle. Having read the storyline, which started with a quote from the poet TS Eliot, I was expecting what those luxury watchmakers call ‘complications’.

Instead, the clothes had the artful simplicity of a master cutter: and those tubes might just be inserts at the wrists and hips of a white jacket, worn over skinny black pants.

If you define fashion designers as either architects or decorators, Rucci is a rare combination of the two, able to cut a rigorous coat, where patterns were taken from the designer’s own drawings.

The most modern piece was a shiny, transparent rain jacket, with a pink cherry-blossom pattern, worn over a white shirt and black pants.

We fashion editors are so conditioned to the idea that garments with this level of handiwork have to be ‘Made in Italy’, that it was good to hear from Ralph Rucci that everything was made in his studio in New York City.

    He said it with pride.

Taking Sportswear Into the Digital Age BY SUZY MENKES

Lacoste and Dion Lee at New York Fashion Week Day Two

Lacoste sailed into American fashion territory in a hyper-modern way. The French sports company was showing its male/female range at the New York collections.

Techno fabrics, angular lines and geometric shapes added up to twenty-first-century style – and won the race to take sportswear into the digital age for summer 2015.

The backdrop of boat sails gave away the message from designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista. He had taken on yacht racing, part of Lacoste's heritage, by following the credo of ocean sportswear fashion: performance, comfort and style.

He might have added 'transparency', for mesh materials made light work of anything from a simple, square top and pants to a translucent raincoat.

Inevitably, the switch between men's and women's clothes saw a tilt from streamlined to more daring effects – for example graphic squares in blood red and orange encasing the front of an ultra-light dress. The men got the look of coloured blocks on simple T-shirts.

The show could have been cut by a third – with more impact. But the designer has made Lacoste credible as a fashion brand without losing its core value: clothes for action.

Australian designer Dion Lee's structured but sporty garments also caught the spirit of the new millennium. Sharp cuts and digital prints created vivid geometric patterns, and gave energy to what were essentially simple clothes.

I liked the way this show of proportions and colour portions was never overdone. Just when the painterly splashes or vivid Matisse-style cut-outs in orange, blue or yellow started to seem too much, the designer moved on to streamlined black dresses, outlined with silver metallic mesh at the neckline.

Melding sport and tailoring created a modern message. And the Dion Lee look – grey zippered jacket with a white skirt decorated with an apron panel of silver mesh – embodied a quirky, sporty spirit.

New York Fashion Week: Day Three BY SUZY MENKES

Suzy Menkes reports from the Versus Versace, Opening Ceremony, Victoria Beckham, Derek Lam, Thakoon and DVF shows.

Opening Ceremony Plays the Fashion Crowd

A flash of coral, tree-bark prints, sleek tailoring and a T-shirt with one sleeve removed were all I took in of the clothes on stage at the Opening Ceremony show.

But the theatrical performance – powerful, penetrating and discomforting enough to have the fashion audience squirming – is now embedded in my memory.

By asking director Spike Jonze and actor Jonah Hill to create a one-act play, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, the duo behind the Opening Ceremony brand, achieved the exceptional: something original in fashion presentation.

The satirical storyline brought together a rookie blonde model up from the sticks (Elle Fanning), a world-weary model at the advanced age of 20 (Dree Hemingway) and a neurotic designer whose self-absorbed insecurity was put on petulant display.

The audience alternated between laughing and shifting awkwardly at this parody of a fashion-show preparation. That included an alcoholic stylist (who cut off the T-shirt sleeve as a statement), and a lesson on how to walk the runway by genuine model Karlie Kloss.

Lim and Leon always think outside of the box. But this play, entitled 100 Per Cent Lost Cotton, was a rare and memorable display of imagination.

AT VERSUS VERSACE: GAMES OF SKIN

Donatella Versace marched out proudly, stonking her high-heeled boots over the black-and-white faux-marble floor, with designer Anthony Vaccarello, in skinny jeans and sneakers, at her side.

I have heard a lot over the years about a designer's DNA – meaning getting to the heart of a fashion vision. And that happened with the new designer at this Versus Versace collection, which has previously been explored by British designers Christopher Kane and Jonathan Anderson.

I have been following at the Paris shows the Belgian/Italian Vaccarello's games of skin – flashes of flesh in sharply cut clothes. In New York, it all came together.

As the models posed on scarlet stairs at the start of the after-party, I saw the essence of Versus: bare legs, short skirts, square necklines, sharply tailored coats, shiny black belts, gilded buckles or gold buttons on a split-side, floor-sweeping, sporty gown.

None of this was a revelation. But Vaccarello took the essence of the look and gave it an erotic minimalism – right down to a re-interpretation of the safety pins holding cloth over flesh that put Elizabeth Hurley on the global fashion map 20 years ago.

A soft white shirt with skinny trousers or a tailored shirtdress with Medusa patterning brought the collection forward to this millennium. Like the flesh-revealing black dresses, the collection could have been sliced in half, yet had the same impact.

But this really was a Versus Versace moment.

Victoria Beckham: Flats and Flowers That Mean Business

City-smart tailoring, neutral colours with black, white and a drop of wine red – Victoria Beckham’s New York show for Summer 2015 proved that she means business. Even the shoes – a new departure – were hefty or flat, ready for taking life in one big stride.

“I’m opening my first retail store in London and that forced me to think about the evolution of my signature,” said Victoria before the show. “It feels like my woman: quite masculine, heels heavier, strict, but with flowers to perfume the collection.”

The designer, who had husband David and son Brooklyn at the show to cheer her on, was referring to the pink flower patterns that closed the collection.

Another polished effect was inserting a surprising piece among the sensible, so a onesie chequered in black and white, or an oversized boyfriend sweater with shoelace ties. But they both had the designer’s ‘I would wear it’ seal of approval.

With the Beckham name and her celebrity status, Victoria has achieved something exceptional: to build a business over eight years that does not rely on her catching attention and publicity in a sexy evening gown. There was not one single outfit intended for the red carpet, although the designer said that there were evening gowns in the “commercial” collection.

But the garments she sent out were surely also designed to sell: coats, tailored with a light hand, made in fabrics such as jute, with an interesting surface. Hemlines were often short – but also mid-calf, in knit, shadowing the hips and then kicking out below the knees. Everywhere, from those clumpy (but not so comfortable looking) shoes to the flat pink flowers, there was a sense of Victoria pushing herself forward and trying something new.

Will it sell? She is about to find out when that first store opens on London’s stylish Dover Street. But you can be sure that this smart pop singer turned business woman will be on message with her customers.

A Moment in the Sun with Diane von Furstenberg

“Parole! Parole!” blared the great Italian song from the 1970s, as Diane von Furstenberg sashayed down the runway, putting in the shade even a smiling Naomi Campbell wearing a white baby-doll dress splattered with colour.

But there was no shade in this sun-drenched DVF collection, where the golden era of the French Riviera was played out in gingham, printed on anything from a bra top to a handbag.

“It’s all about St Tropez, about colour and beauty and sun,” said the designer backstage to describe the spirit of this collection.

The French have been celebrating a half-century of Brigitte Bardot, the sulky, steamy, baby-faced film star who embodied the spirit of the South of France in the 1950s and ’60s. Her childlike sexiness, served up in denim, made her the movie-poster girl of her time.

But DVF is far too smart to make carbon copies from fashion’s past. She worked the gingham into pert dresses, black-and-white check skirts dressed up with bubble-gum pink plastic – and not all in the traditional cotton. Floaty chiffon gave a different dimension to the checks.

There were plenty of other prints to counter-balance these graphic checks: bold flowers, stripes, Matisse-style cut-out leaves, or just plain lace.

From coats to long dresses, these were clothes to be worn by those sporty, sexy women who have graced their curvaceous bodies with the iconic DVF wrap dress.

This kind of fashion is not, as they say, brain surgery. It is, rather, creativity light. But Diane has survived for all these years because of her right-on attitude to – and for – women. These were dresses, skirts and pants in which you stride out, confident of your sexuality.

Backstage, at the models’ entrance, was posted a board that read: “Be happy, be sexy, be the woman you want to be. Smile!”

We have heard it all before. But this was DVF at her most compelling.

    Thakoon S/S 2015

Music from Black Orpheus transported Midtown New York to the favelas of Brazil. But this is where the connection between the Thakoon show and the compelling and sensual 1959 movie ended.

The Thai-American designer told this season’s story backstage when he said, “exotic through the eyes of a tourist”. There were mostly pale western models dressing up in clothes where patterns of jungle leaves or tufts of threads were not enough to capture the drumbeats of desire or the wildness of the Rio Carnival.

But maybe that was the point: to catch the Brazilian spirit without making the clothes seem too ‘ethnic’. The mix of crisp top and short skirt, with just the tufts to suggest a rough tribal beat; or the flow of light, translucent pants below a boldly patterned tunic top westernised the wilder elements.

Black and white triangular patterns, in the spirit of Italian jesters, added another dynamic and more geometric effect. It did not really add up to a coherent show, but there were strong elements which will come through as this Thakoon collection gets a retail edit.

Derek Lam: A Study in Suede

“There is always an element of the 1970s with me, but it has to be relevant to now,” said Derek Lam, after sending out high-class versions of suede and patchwork in painterly colours like lavender and turquoise.

The designer may have had Joni Mitchell’s 1974 ‘Help Me’ on the soundtrack, but he did not need any help in bringing the ‘70s into his Summer 2015 collection.

The proportions of long, soft, high-waisted pants hearkened back to the hippie era, but they were given a graceful sensuality – or they were worn with crisp partners, such as tailored tops stiffened with studs.

However lush the palette, the quantity of suede seemed overwhelming, especially for a summer collection. Yet Lam has a point of view, fixing his style between smart cutting and soft fabrics, or stirring a dreamy luxury into sportswear. It is a gentle fashion voice – but a pleasing one.
