Conde Nast Luxury Conference: The Force Is Strong

Hot on the heels of a scintillating first session at the Condé Nast international conference, with designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson, it was the turn of Berluti CEO Antoine Arnault,Tory Burch, and Tiffany & Co CEO Frédéric Cumenal to take to the stage at the Palazzo Vecchio. The three shared their thoughts on navigating the new world of luxury.

For Arnault, the future of luxury fashion is very much focused on menswear, with it “currently taking a larger part of the business than women”, he told the crowd, explaining that, “the shift between casual and formal is helping through all categories.” He also reminded delegates that the key to keeping the luxury customer is to remember that they are “the boss”.

Burch attributed social media and being online from day one as the major factor in taking her eponymous brand from Manhattan boutique to multimillion-dollar success story.

“Technology has helped to make our customers’ lives easy – we have profiles on them so we can tell each what she has bought in the past and what she might like in the future,” Burch explained. “When I started I had no business experience and I had never been a designer – I have really learned on the job, so social media was really helpful to our brand because we didn’t have the financial resources to do it the traditional way. It’s great – it’s a direct line to our customer. We would never buy followers, we want authentic feedback.”

Followers isn’t something that Tiffany & Co has trouble with - the inception of the engagement ring, those little blue boxes and Holly Golightly can attest to that – but it does beg the question: how can a heritage brand transition its way into the future? According to Cumenal, it’s about keeping the brand’s meaning at heart.

“In luxury we all talk about heritage and history and there is no shortcut to that – there is no app for that either. Heritage is the essence of who you are. We must go beyond worth, and focus on authenticity, integrity and inspiration,” he told the crowd. “When people are constantly being bombarded by information, authenticity gives them something they can hold on to. Being part of a meaningful brand is to bring new ideas and something significant to the world. Any demand to change should be embraced as an opportunity, in the same ways as our founders did.”
