올림픽으로 이목을 집중시키는 건 패션계에서 그다지 독창적인 일은 아니다. 늘 거기에 있었고 늘 그래왔었다. 그리고 이 이야기는 특히나 라코스테에게 해당된다. 라코스테의 스포츠 정신과 악어모양 엠블럼은 빈번히 프랑스 올림픽 팀과 함께 등장해왔다. 그리고 2016년 8월 열릴 리오 데 자네이루 올림픽의 국가별 퍼레이드에서도 마찬가지일 것이다.

그러나 라코스테의 크리에이티브 디렉터 펠리페 올리베이라 밥티스타는 모두를 놀래 켰다. 2016년도 S/S 컬렉션이 스포츠웨어에 포커스를 두지 않은 것이다. 지난 8월 테러리스트의 공격으로부터 프랑스 열차를 구해낸 두 명의 미국 공군과 대학생이 레지옹 도뇌르 훈장을 받을 때 1926년 르네 라코스테가 처음 디자인했던 폴로셔츠를 입고 엘리제 궁에 나타난 이후임에도 말이다.

“깃발과 군복에 초점을 맞췄어요. 둘 다 매우 반듯하고 깔끔하죠. 그리고 나서 이 모든 걸 섞어버렸죠.”

백스테이지에서 디자이너가 이번 컬렉션의 효과와 그 목적에 대해 설명했다. 1980년대 체조선수들이 사용했던 텐션 스트레치 밴드가 스포티한 몸매의 굴곡을 그대로 드러냈다. 그리고 기능적인 가치가 패션보다 우선시된 인체공학적인 의상이 소개되었다.

라코스테 쇼의 하이라이트는 각 국기의 그래픽 패턴들이 예술적인 카무플라주로 변신해 드라마틱한 효과를 불러일으킨 때였다.

이 모두가 미학적으로 성공했을까? 남성의 경우는 그러했다. 원색으로 된 기하학적인 라인들이 새하얀 반바지와 스니커즈 위를 가로질렀다. 여성의 경우는 꼭 그렇지는 않았다. 브라 톱에 집착한 밥티스타가 기하학적인 선과 신체의 굴곡을 엉망으로 뒤섞어버렸기 때문이다. 좀더 재단에 신경 쓴 남성복과 비교해서 날카로운 커터웨이가 들어간 여성복은 스포츠웨어로서의 느낌이 떨어졌다.

또한 라코스테는 흥미로운 패브릭 사용에서 강점을 보여, 은빛 팬츠는 우주복이 아니라 실용적인 느낌을 주었다.

금메달 감은 아니더라도 훌륭한 은메달이라는 것이 이번 라코스테의 파워풀한 컬렉션에 대한 적절한 은유가 되겠다. 이번 컬렉션에서는 다른 국기들 중에서 미국의 성조기가 마지막을 장식했다.

Lacoste Flies A Flag For The Olympics

Flagging up the Olympic Games does not seem so original for fashion. Been there, done that. And the story is especially true of Lacoste, whose sporty spirit and emblematic crocodile has frequently been part of the French Olympic team, as it will for the Parade of Nations in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August 2016.

But Lacoste’s creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista sprung a surprise: his spring/summer 2016 collection was not only focused on sportswear – even after the two off-duty American airmen and US student, who saved a French train from a terrorist attack, showed up at the Elysée Palace to collect their Légion d’Honneurs wearing the kind of cotton polo shirts that René Lacoste invented in 1926.

“It was about flags and military uniforms, very strict and clear – and then mixing them all together,” the designer said backstage, explaining the effect and its purpose: to trace the sporty body with tension stretch bands, as used by gymnasts in the 1980s; and to produce ergonomic garments whose functional value leads over fashion.

The highlights of the Lacoste show were the graphic flag patterns, turned into a kind of artistic camouflage to dramatic effect.

Did it all work aesthetically? Yes for the men, when geometric lines in primary colours were set against white shorts and snowy sneakers. Less so for the women, where Baptista’s enthusiasm for bra tops made for a mash-up of geometric lines and body curves. The female effects, with sharp cutaways, were not as convincing as the sportswear, compared to the male equivalent where there was more tailoring.

Where Lacoste scored was in intriguing fabrics, as in the silvered trouser outfits that looked practical rather than Space Age.

Not quite a Gold Medal winner, but a fine Silver is a neat metaphor for this powerful collection, which finished with America’s Stars and Stripes among the other national flags.
