    What to Expect From MoMA’s First Fashion Exhibition

    70년 만에 처음 열리는 모마의 패션 전시회에서 우리는 무엇을 기대할 것인가?

    모마(MoMA, Museum of Modern Art)와 패션 전시회를 연결 짓는 것만으로도 스타일 광들은 전율을 느낀다. 모마는 오랫동안 고급 디자인의 결정권자였다. 그래서 패션 피플들은 2015년 그 계획이 발표된 후로 현대 패션에 바치는 모마의 송가를 학수고대해왔다. 지난 주 이번 전시회의 프리뷰와 오프닝 파티 때 사람들로 꽉 찬 갤러리들을 둘러본 후 한 가지 공통된 의견이 있었다. <Items: Is Fashion Modern?> 전은 당신이 패션 전시회나 모마에 기대했을 법한 그런 것이 아니었다. 좋은 의미로 말이다.

    전시회는 건축과 디자인 담당 수석 큐레이터인 파올라 안토넬리가 자신의 책상 위 포스트잇에 적은 “세상을 바꾼 의상들” 리스트에서 시작되었다. 마침내 모마의 관장인 글렌 D. 로우리의 재촉으로 안토넬리와 전원 여성으로 구성된 큐레이터 팀은 그 리스트를 모마의 1944년 전시회 <Are Clothes Modern?>와 맥을 같이 하는 전시회로 바꿀 준비를 시작했다. 새로 고친 널찍한 6층 갤러리에는 안토넬리와 그녀의 팀이 패션의 가장 중요한, 그리고 판도를 바꾼 아이템으로 선정한 111개의 작품이 전시되었다. 이 리스트에는 후디, 진, 히잡, 요가 팬츠, 플랫폼, 스틸레토, 플립-플랍, 키파(kippah, 유대인 남자들의 머리 정수리에 쓰는 작고 동글납작한 모자), 치노, 에비에이터 선글라스, 숄, 로퍼, 도어 노커 이어링(door-knocker earring, 귀고리 밑에 부착된, 커다란 고리가 현관문의 방문객 노크용 쇠고리를 연상시키는 데서 유래한 귀고리), 그리고 리틀 블랙 드레스가 포함되어 있다. 23개 브랜드가 구체적인 요청을 받았고 그 중 6개가 신발 브랜드-나이키 에어 포스 원(Nike Air Force 1), 아디다스 스탠 스미스(Adidas Stan Smith), 컨버스 올 스타즈(Converse All Stars), 닥터 마틴(Dr. Martens), 테바(Teva), 그리고 메종 마르지엘라 타비(Tabi) 부츠-이다. 두 브랜드는 뷰티 제품-YSL 투쉬 에클라(YSL Touche Eclat)와 샤넬 넘버 5-을 기증했다. 전시회에서 선보이는 아이템들은 모두 20세기와 21세기 제품들이며 의도적으로 뉴욕 중심으로 구성됐다(그 증거로 도나 카렌의 “Seven Easy Pieces”나 프라다의 벨라(Vela) 나일론 백팩을 보라).

    이 아이템들이 어떻게 현대 생활의 일부인지를 보여주기 위해 각 섹션에는 텍스트와 슬라이드 쇼가 함께 한다. 밀레니얼 세대가 반색할 만한 몇 가지 이미지는 누군가의 페이스북 메모리에서 가져온 듯 보인다. 패니 팩 디스플레이 밑에 전시된 사진은 특히 그렇다. 이 사진에는 하우스 파티처럼 보이는 장소에서 허리에 작은 가방을 차고 <Graduation> 앨범 시절 카니에 웨스트가 아끼던 줄무늬 선글라스를 쓴 남자의 모습이 담겨 있다. (밀레니얼 세대는 아마도 슬립 드레스 섹션에서 자신들이 놓친 기회도 알아차릴 것이다. 여기에 전시된 1994년 캘빈 클라인의 화이트 드레스는 알리샤 실버스톤이 영화 <클루리스(Clueless)>입었던 것과 같은 스타일이다.)

    그러나 이런 팝문화의 흥미로운 이야기를 즐기기 위해 나이가 꼭 35세 미만일 필요는 없다. 1783년 엘리자베스 비제 르 브룅(Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun)이 그린 마리 앙트와네트의 초상화는 결혼식 날 찍은 캐롤린 베셋 케네디의 사진과 함께 슬립 드레스 섹션에 전시되어 있다. 80년대 다이안 딕슨(Diane Dixon)을 위해 제작된 대퍼 댄(Dapper Dan)의 루이 비통 모노그램 코트는 구찌의 2017년 런웨이에 등장한 리메이크 제품과 함께 선보인다. 핵심은 이것이다: 당신이 누구든, 어디 출신이든 이곳에는 당신을 대변해줄 아이템이 있다. 그리고 이런 구성은 기적 같은 뛰어난 솜씨가 아닐 수 없다.

    <Items: Is Fashion Modern?>을 너무나 즐거운 경험으로 만들어주는 건 이런 보편적인 감각이다. 나는 오프닝 파티 때 부산하게 돌아다니면서 마스크로 변신한 이지(Yeezy) 스니커즈에 흥분한 베이프(Bape) T셔츠를 입은 10대 소년, 마이크로 미니스커트를 꼼꼼히 살펴보는 중년 여성, 버킨 백을 바라보는 아주 시크한 고급주택 거주자, 그리고 전시회에 걸린 그래픽 T들을 아이폰으로 찍는 일련의 젊은 친구들을 목격했다. 당신은 이 아이템들을 보며 행복과 슬픔에 잠긴 자신을 발견하게 된다. 당신은 지금은 세상을 떠난 리처드 니콜(Richard Nicoll)의 LED 발광 미니 드레스를 보며 그것이 어두운 구석에서 청록색으로 깜빡일 때 미소를 지을 것이다. 당신은 트레이본 마틴(Trayvon Martin)을 비롯해 무분별하게 총에 맞아 숨진 사람들을 추모하듯 검은 벽 높이 전시된 한 빨간 챔피온 후디를 보고 울 수도 있다. 다른 프로 선수들의 운동 셔츠와 대비를 이루는 콜린 캐퍼닉(Colin Kaepernick)의 운동 셔츠를 본 후 당신은 함께 온 사람들과 NFL, 애국가, 그리고 캐퍼닉의 커리어에 대해 논쟁을 벌일 것이다. 당신은 분명 기프트 숍에서 걸음을 멈추고 이번 전시회를 위해 특별히 제작된 랄프 로렌 폴로 셔츠, 브레튼 톱(스트라이프 톱), 그리고 양키스 야구 모자를 유심히 볼 것이다.

    한 술 더 떠서 모마를 떠난 당신은 라인업에 포함되진 않았지만 자신이 꼽고 싶은 현재의 삶을 대변하는 아이템들을 생각하며 몇 시간, 아니 며칠을 보낼 것이다. 방호복(Hazmat suit)은 어떤가? 웨딩 드레스는? 양말은? 안토넬리와 그녀의 팀은 당신의 모던한 옷장을 정의하는 아이템들을 떠올려보게 하고 그것을 #ItemsMoMA 해시태그와 함께 인스타그램에 올리도록 부추긴다. 아마도 그것이 이번 전시의 가장 모던한 부분일 것이다. 이번 전시회가 패션에 대한 완전한 정의는 아니다. 오히려 그것은 당신으로 하여금 자신의 삶, 자신의 옷, 그리고 그것이 세상에서 의미하는 바를 점검하게 만드는 쌍방향적인 경험이다.

    <Items: Is Fashion Modern?>전은 모마에서 내년 1월 28일까지 계속된다.
