2025년은 제인 오스틴의 탄생 250주년입니다. 그녀의 대표작 <오만과 편견>을 각색한 조 라이트 감독의 2005년 영화도 20주년을 맞아 (미국에서) 재개봉하며, 기념비적 분위기를 더하고 있죠. 그래서 <보그 런웨이> 아카이브를 뒤져 현대 디자이너들이 어떤 식으로 제인 오스틴 시대에 영감을 받았는지 살펴보았습니다. 그녀가 살던 시대는 신고전주의 영향을 받아 가볍고 직선적인 라인이 유행해, 가슴 밑에서 치마 끝까지 여유롭게 떨어지는 엠파이어 실루엣 드레스가 특징이죠. 데콜테나 ‘리젠시’ 선반이라 불리는 목선 아래를 강조하는 오픈 네크라인 드레스는 오늘날 볼륨 있는 가슴 라인을 강조하는 미적 기준과는 거리가 있습니다. 하지만 오늘날에도 리젠시 스타일이 매력적인 이유는, 자연스러운 몸을 수용하기 때문이죠. 제인의 베넷 자매는 코르셋을 입었을지라도 단단히 조이지 않았습니다. 크리놀린이나 파니에(옷을 부풀리는 구조물) 때문에 문을 통과하지 못하거나 들판을 걷지 못하는 볼썽사나운 꼴도 없었죠. 작가의 관심은 몸을 개조시키는 데 있지 않고, 마음과 영혼을 변혁시키는 데 있었습니다. 특히 사랑에 열려 있을 때, 진정한 변화가 찾아올 거라 믿었죠.
