    Jeremy Scott

    Anna Sui

    Michael Kors

    Marchesa: Lightening the Red Carpet

With Oscars on the horizon and Tom Ford prepping for his first-ever Hollywood show, red-carpet gowns might seem stock-in-trade for Marchesa.

But co-designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig have grown more sophisticated since their start-up of grand gestures with big – very big – gowns. You could glide gracefully through the door in any of these outfits.

There were also more casual ways of dressing up, especially the cocktail trousers with the back cut away to offer discreet flashes of flesh. Even more skin appeared on slender, fringed silk dresses.

“Decadent and hedonistic, and quite sexy,” said Georgina of her concept for the collection, as two models swooshed through the St Regis hotel in born-for-the-Academy-Awards dresses.

The theme was “Opium nights”, hence poppies as floral decoration. But it might as well have been the Roaring Twenties, since there was a Great Gatsby feel to silvery dresses that formed slim drapery for a shapely body. The clouds of lilac chiffon and wispy feathers anchored by crystals were deliciously delicate.

The design duo has learned on the job after a rather heavy-handed start. But the point is that they have developed a clear spirit – and this was a pretty and subtle collection.

    Proenza Schouler: Fighting Against Normcore

If the definition of ‘normcore’ is the elevation of unpretentious, ordinary, unremarkable clothes, then a Proenza Schouler collection is the polar opposite.

Nothing in the collection of Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez is even faintly ordinary. Each outfit is a bold statement, with car-wash panels falling where a plain collar might be and surfaces rich and thick with invention.

Backstage at the Whitney Museum, now moving downtown, the designers explained their artistic, cultural, and technical influences. They had researched the mid-20th-century artistic movement and the pieced-together work of sculptor Robert Morris in particular.

“They are all slashes, it has to feel spontaneous and organic,” Lazaro said of cut-away collars and bodices; while his co-creator waxed lyrical over needle punching and about the effect of 30,000 sequins, inverted sideways.

Those minuscule crystals brought a sparkling glow to evening wear and were just one example of how the designers are pushing fashion forward towards art and craft.

The finale pieces with embroidery densely woven on to chiffon to give it a hefty solidarity were almost tribal in effect: team Proenza against the minimalistic and the mundane.

Jeremy Scott: Releasing your Inner Child

From kiddie land to baby talk, Jeremy Scott appeared to be regressing. But the enfant terrible of American fashion seems able to draw his energy from anywhere.

The baby talk on the soundtrack set the mood for outfits that looked like a nursery wardrobe way back when, complete with ruffs at the necks and prints from a four-year-old’s bedtime story.

Jeremy usually has a more obvious theme than toys, but there was a certain charm to these sporty outfits in mad patterns and colours. The prints all seemed doll-related, with the slight weirdness associated with grown ups in kids’ clothing. But the Jeremy Scott story is about being cheerful and colourful in a solemn world. For this West Coast designer, fashion life is a perpetual sunshine of the spotless mind.

    Anna Sui: Vikings Ahoy!

“I did watch a TV show about the Vikings,” said the irrepressible Anna Sui backstage, as two models negotiated removing hats built with horns while taking off layers of colourful clothing.

To a certain extent, Anna Sui always shows the same style: happy, boho-deluxe women (and a sprinkling of men) in clothes that always look as though they started some moons ago on a hippy trail but have since smartened up.

The look for Fall/Winter 2015 was a familiar meld of decorative knits, patterned mid-calf hemlines with knee-high boots, or mini skirts with ankle boots.

But with a tilt towards pretty colours from yellow to mauve and an icy glamour from the world of Frozen or the Vikings, Anna Sui has once again pushed the ‘refresh’ button.

Boss Woos Women of Wall Street

In a time of austerity, should fashion respond with severity chic?

As Jason Wu took his bow at Boss, he walked, like the models, past breathtaking views of  a pale blue sky, the high rises of the World Trade Centre area and the rippling water of the Hudson River.

Movie star Julianne Moore was just one of the celebrities at this Hugo Boss womenswear collection, but the clothes suggested that Wu had his eye on the sharp, executive women of Wall Street.

This ode to the woman who has broken the glass ceiling and reached the top in the world of finance included a wardrobe of skinny black dresses, sleek coats – some flashed with red, and the kind of footwear that suggests you mean business.

I contest this view of the woman boss wearing clothes that Wu labelled “industrial beauty”. Whereas Hugo Boss for men is built on tailoring, a woman’s wardrobe needs to be more nuanced, however elegant some of the equestrian styling.

As Artistic Director, Wu produced some fine effects with texture – especially using sheen, rather than sparkle, to illuminate the breast of a dress. The textural message was strong, as colour or print was kept inside strict geometric lines that broke up the outfits with materials such as fine-weave tweed.

It was still an exercise in solemnity, however. I guess the (male) wolves of Wall Street just have more fun.

    MICHAEL KORS: OPULENT RESTRAINT

“I did take myself down to Vermont, but I didn’t rough it!” said a merry Michael Kors backstage, receiving celebrity guests on one side and compliments from all around for his show of autumnal beauty.

The fall-inspired colours were everywhere: rich chestnut, squirrel ginger and the tree-bark brown of the wood-floor runway.

But the fur-trimmed coats, their arms often slit open like a cape, and the calf-length skirts were as appropriate to the city as to the country. There was a lushness to the collection that was at the same time totally wearable. This was the best gathering of daywear we have seen yet at the New York Autumn 2015 shows.

Then, when evening came, it incorporated the spun gold of a winter sun, creating powerful decoration at the cuffs of a gold-buttoned coat, and as a dress for an East Coast golden girl.

What Kors produced, in his own words, was “opulent restraint”. That could mean a silken pyjama suit, but more often it was a fluffy sweater in mud brown, or a cream cable knit that looked rich and cosy.

The cape coat was a fresh way of dealing with outerwear. And it was credible to imagine winter in the city with an arm free for those ever-present smart phones.

To me, there was the merest hint of the 1970s in the velvet surfaces, paisley patterns and saddle bags. The checked tweed worn with brogues looked any-era classic.

But the line-up of international stars, including Kate Hudson, Poppy Delevingne and Ming Xi, proved that Michael Kors is, for this generation, American fashion’s golden boy.
