똑 떨어지는 코트 위에 그려진 싱싱한 녹색의 꽃들, 또는 검은색 소용돌이 꽃무늬와 대비되는 핑크 빛 꽃송이… 수노의 컬렉션은 어둡고 비밀스러운 이면과 싸우는 낙천주의를 주제로 삼았고, 이를 잘 살려냈다.

수노의 디자이너 막스 오스터와이스와 에린 비티가 작성한 쇼 노트에서는 샬롯 브론테의 <제인에어>, 이어서 <광막한 사르가소 바다>의 “다락방의 광녀”가 보여주는 광기를 투영해 만들어진 복잡한 영감에 대해 설명하고 있다.

그러나 사실 이 강렬한 쇼는 막스의 아프리카 혈통을 바탕으로, 케냐와 인도· 페루의 의류업계 노동자들을 돕고 싶은 욕망이 혼합된 것이기도 했다. 결과적으로, 자메이카 식의 밝은 스트라이프가 들어간 쭉 뻗은 실루엣과 강렬하면서 평면적인 꽃들, 그리고 미묘하게 흐트러진 듯한 느낌이 혼합된 생생한 쇼가 되었다.

“난 우루과이 출신이에요. 나무를 사랑하죠.” 가브리엘라 허스트는 뉴욕의 타운하우스에서 이렇게 설명했다. 이곳에서는 조각된 나무조각, 그리고 비슷한 느낌의 부츠가 가브리엘라 허스트의 이름을 건 첫 번째 컬렉션의 정신을 보여주고 있었다. 그녀가 디자인하고 이탈리아에서 제작된 의상들까지 말이다.

탈착이 가능한 퍼 라이닝이 들어간 트위드 코트, 다채로운 실크 리본으로 엮어진 스웨터, 그리고 강아지 모양을 한 메탈클립 같은 액세서리들은 독특함이 가미된 우아한 컬렉션을 만들어냈다. 더 로우나 에르메스처럼 어마어마한 가격이 아님에도 가브리엘라는 흡사한 기쁨을 주는 작품들을 만들어냈다.

Suno: Clothes With a Soul 

Lush green flowers on a strict coat or pink blooms against black floral swirls… The Suno collection suggested a struggle for optimism with dark undertones. And so it was.

The show notes by Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty revealed a complex inspiration, reflecting on the madness in Charlotte Bronte’s novel, Jane Eyre and the subsequent link to the “mad woman in the attic” in the Wide Sargasso Sea.

But this strong show was really a meld of Max’s African roots and a desire to give work to garment industry workers in Kenya, as well as India and Peru. The result was a lively show of straight silhouettes with a Jamaican twist of bright stripes, vivid flat flowers and a subtle sense of unravelling.

Gabriela Hearst: Carved in Wood

“I am from Uruguay – I love wood,” explained Gabriela Hearst, speaking in the New York townhouse where chunks of carved wood and similar textures on boots caught the spirit of the first collection in her name: clothes designed – and made in Italy – to last.

A tweed coat with a detachable fur lining, a sweater threaded with colourful silk ribbons, and a theme of hardware in the form of metal dog clips made an elegant collection with a twist. The prices are not as formidable as The Row or Hermès, but Gabriela works in a similar groove.
