칼 라거펠트가 말했다. 영국패션협회의 안나 윈투어로부터 <최고공로상(Outstanding Achievement Award)”를 수상할 때 입고 나온 은빛 재킷은 조명 아래에서 눈부시게 빛났다.

빅토리아와 데이비드 베컴 부부, 나탈리 마스네, 그리고 리타 오라 등이 참석한 런던 콜로세움 극장에서의 만찬이 끝난 후 칼 라거펠트가 이렇게 말한 건 영국패션이 점차 글로벌해지고 있다는 의미에서였다.

잠재적인 수상자로 지목되던 디자이너들조차 다국적이었다. 캐나다와 터키에 뿌리를 둔 에르뎀, 그리스에서 온 마리 카트란주, 그리고 아일랜드에서 온 JW 앤더슨까지 말이다.

시상자들 역시 국제적이었다. 케이트 보스워스, 발망 파리의 올리비에 루스테잉, 엘리사 세드나위와 올랜도 블룸, 여기에다 그 누가 재기발랄한 <앱솔루틀리 패뷸러스(Absolutely Fabulous)>의 듀오 에디나 몬순과 팻시 스톤 이상으로 눈길을 끌 수 있었으랴.

그러나 이번 이벤트가 런던의 싸늘한 겨울 밤보다는 할리우드에서 열린 것처럼 느껴진 이유는 따로 있었다. 길게 째지거나, 활짝 열리거나, 앞섶이 푹 파였거나 등이 다 드러난 의상들 덕이었다.

모델 조단 던은 흑백의 뮈글러 드레스를 입고 허벅지를 드러냈다. 로지 헌팅턴 휘틀리가 입은 버버리 드레스는 앞쪽이 가파르게 파여있었다. 톱숍의 제왕 필립 그린 경의 딸 클로이 그린은 심지어 더 깊게 파인 드레스를 입었다. 오직 레이디 가가 만이 톰 포드의 아찔한 레이스 레드 드레스를 걸치고 우아해 보일 뿐이었다.

JW 앤더슨의 조나단 앤더슨이 남성복과 여성복 모두에서 상을 휩쓸긴 했지만 이날 밤은 수상에 연연하는 자리가 아니었다. 대신 자일스 디컨의 매끈하고 반짝이는 드레스를 입고 아름다움을 뽐낸 키다리 여배우 그웬돌린 크리스티와 같은 다양한 시상자와 수상자들의 밤이었다.

알렉사 청은 케이트 보스워스와 마찬가지로 에르뎀을 입었다. 마치 비에 씻긴 말간 하늘과도 같은 빛의 쉬폰 드레스였다.

칼 라거펠트는 연설을 통해 런던의 패션 씬을 짚어내며 말했다. “파리에서 보는 런던은 영국인들이 사는 런던과는 매우 다릅니다. 런던은 엄청난 영감을 주는 도시입니다. 나는 내가 잉글랜드의 패션 식민지로부터 상을 받을 거라고는 생각도 못했죠. 그래서 정말 기쁩니다.”

이날 밤은 영국의 패션이 이제 세계적이면서도 지역적이란 걸 증명하는 자리였다.

British fashion: Now Global AND Local

“They have a lot of talent, they are daring, they are never boring – and it is quite exciting. I am flattered I got this award,” said Karl Lagerfeld, the light shining off his silver jacket as he received an ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ from Anna Wintour for the British Fashion Council.

What Karl was saying, after dining on a table at London’s Coliseum with Victoria and David Beckham, Natalie Massenet and Rita Ora among others, was that British fashion has gone global.

Even the names included as potential award-winners were multi-national, including Erdem, whose roots are in Canada and Turkey, Mary Katrantzou from Greece, and JW Anderson from Ireland.

The award presenters were also international, including Kate Bosworth, Olivier Rousteing from Balmain in Paris, Elisa Sednaoui and Orlando Bloom – although nobody could upstage the jokey Ab Fab duo of Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone.

But there was another reason that this event looked more like Hollywood than a chilly night in London’s winter climate: the slash-down, open-up, scoop-front, bare-back outfits.

Model Jourdan Dunn showed a length of thigh in her black-and-white Mugler gown; Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Burberry dress dipped into a deep plunge at the front; Chloe Green, daughter of Topshop king Sir Philip Green, wore a dress that dropped even lower; while Lady Gaga seemed only elegantly revealing in her racy, lacy red dress by Tom Ford.

The evening was not so much about who won, although Jonathan Anderson of JW Anderson picked up twin awards for both men’s and womenswear. Instead it was the varied presenters and winners – such as super-tall Gwendoline Christie, thanking Giles Deacon for her slithery, shining dress!

Alexa Chung wore Erdem, as did Kate Bosworth, whose chiffon dress was the colour of the rain-washed sky.

In his speech, Karl Lagerfeld acknowledged the London fashion scene. “From Paris, London looks very different than London is for British people.” He added: “London is a great inspiration. I never would have thought I would get an award from the English fashion colony so I am very flattered.”

The night proved that British fashion is now global and local.
