유튜브에 커버곡 영상을 올리던 소년이 대형 레이블의 눈에 들어 계약을 하고, 몇 년 뒤 도쿄 돔 콘서트 전석 매진의 주인공이 된다. 진부한 영화나 드라마 시나리오처럼 들리지만, 이는 2019년 데뷔 후 일본 최고의 팝 스타로 거듭난 후지이 카제(Fujii Kaze)의 얘기입니다. 재즈, R&B, 소울과 일본 전통 가요를 세련되게 혼합한 음악을 선보이는 그는 최근 생애 첫 코첼라 공연을 성공적으로 마쳤습니다. 며칠 전에는 내년 1월 9일 고척스카이돔 내한 공연 소식을 알리기도 했고요.

후지이 카제는 언제나 사랑과 희망을 노래합니다. 취미로 커버곡을 부르던 10년 전이나 수만 명 앞에서 공연을 하는 지금이나 노래하는 게 변함없이 즐겁다는 후지이 카제. <보그>가 뮤직비디오 촬영과 월드 투어 등으로 한창 바쁜 그에게 질문지를 보냈습니다. 카제는 깊이 고민한 흔적이 느껴지는 답변과 코첼라 공연을 준비하며 틈틈이 촬영한 사진을 손수 작성한 캡션과 함께 전송했죠.

‘Annyeonghaseyo’, 후지이 카제라고 합니다. 수줍음도, 서투른 면도 많은 사람입니다. 노래를 하고, 때로는 명상을 합니다. 저에 대해 더 알고 싶다면 제 음악을 들어보세요.

제가 후지이 카제라는 이름을 처음 들은 것은 2019년이었습니다. 마리야 다케우치의 ‘Plastic Love’를 커버한 유튜브 영상을 보던 순간이 아직도 생생해요. 당신이 일본 최고의 팝 스타가 될 거라고 상상조차 하지 못했죠. 언제나 아티스트가 되길 꿈꿨나요?

그렇다고 할 수 있겠군요. 음악이나 비주얼, 단어에 관한 영감은 언제나 제 안에 있었습니다. 그걸 분출하고 세상과 공유하고 싶다는 생각도 예전부터 있었고요. 유튜브에 커버곡을 올리기 시작한 것도 같은 이유입니다.

공식 유튜브 채널에 데뷔 전 커버 영상을 삭제하지 않는 이유가 개인적으로 궁금합니다. 대부분의 가수는 매니지먼트나 브랜딩 차원에서 정리하고 싶어 할 것 같거든요.

그 영상은 제 ‘흑역사’ 그 자체죠.(웃음) 저도 예전 영상을 보면서 ‘왜 아직도 안 지웠지?’ 싶거든요. 사실 몰래 지운 영상도 몇 개 있습니다. 하지만 소속사나 매니저 모두 영상을 내리라고 한 적은 없어요. 오히려 ‘그대로 두자’는 쪽에 가깝죠. 저도 그렇고 부모님도 그때 영상을 보며 추억에 빠지곤 해서 앞으로도 쭉 놔둘 것 같아요.

당신의 음악에서 재즈, R&B, 소울 등 다양한 장르로부터 받은 영향이 느껴져요. AKB48이나 아라시 같은 아이돌 그룹의 노래를 커버하는 걸 보며 편견 없이 음악을 대한다는 생각도 들었고요.

어떤 음악이 사람들을 매료하는지에 대해 늘 관심이 있었습니다. 그 음악이 제 취향이든 아니든 상관없이 말이죠. 학창 시절 주변 친구들은 대부분 아이돌 음악을 좋아했습니다. 그래서 저도 그 음악을 들으면서, 인기의 이유를 알아내려고 노력했죠. 일본 아이돌뿐 아니라 과거를 거슬러 올라가며 여러 시대 히트곡을 찾아 듣는 과정에서 자연스럽게 1980년대 음악을 사랑하게 됐고요.

얼마 전 공개한 월드 베이스볼 클래식(World Baseball Classic, WBC)의 사운드트랙 ‘My Place’에는 푸에르토리코 출신 프로듀서 타이니(Tainy)가 함께했습니다. 한국 프로듀서 250과도 작업한 적 있고요. 끊임없이 해외 프로듀서들과 협업하는 것도 ‘어떤 음악이 대중을 사로잡는가’에 대한 탐구의 일환인가요?

요즘은 다양한 문화권의 아티스트와 협업하는 게 정말 재밌어요. 음악적인 어휘를 더 풍부하게 만들죠. 제 창의력을 바탕으로 여러 실험을 해보고 싶습니다.

‘최애’ 아티스트나 장르를 꼽는다면요?

마이클 잭슨의 카리스마와 정신에서 늘 영감을 받습니다. 팝 음악도 마찬가지고요. 제 안에서 가장 깊이 뿌리내린 것은 재즈입니다. 아버지의 영향으로 듣기 시작했죠. R&B와 소울 음악 역시 마찬가지입니다.

아버지에게서 많은 영향을 받은 것 같아요. 유튜브를 해보라고 권한 것도 아버지였죠. 그에게 배운 가장 중요한 교훈은 무엇인가요?

어떤 일이 벌어져도 절대 믿음을 잃어서는 안 된다는 것.

지난해에 발매한 앨범 <Prema> 이야기를 해볼까요. ‘Prema’는 산스크리트어로 ‘Supreme Love’, 즉 ‘절대적인 사랑’을 뜻합니다. 당신에게 ‘절대적인 사랑’이란 어떤 의미인가요?

제 궁극적인 지향점이죠. 제 음악을 들을 때는 물론, 저를 바라볼 때도 ‘절대적인 사랑’을 느꼈으면 좋겠습니다. 인생의 목표라고 말했지만, 아직 거기까지 가려면 한참 멀었다는 생각도 듭니다. <Prema>는 그런 목표를 가진 제가 거쳐온 모든 것, 그러니까 제 인생이 담긴 앨범입니다.

<Prema>의 핵심 메시지는 무엇인가요?

우리 모두가 ‘사랑’ 그 자체라는 사실이요. 결국 가장 중요한 것은 누구나 ‘절대적인 사랑’에 도달할 수 있고, 그 방향으로 나아갈 수 있다는 메시지죠. 좀 더 뭉뚱그려 얘기하면 그냥 ‘신’이라고 표현할 수도 있겠군요.

인터뷰를 준비하며 당신 노래의 가사를 주의 깊게 읽어봤어요. 대부분 희망에 대해 노래하더군요. 혼란스러운 세상에도 희망을 놓지 않는 이유가 있나요?

저를 비롯해 모두가 신의 일부니까요. 세상에 벌어지는 모든 일은 신과 자연의 섭리입니다.

비주얼에도 공을 많이 들이죠. ‘Prema’와 ‘Hana’의 뮤직비디오가 특히 인상적이었어요. ‘I Need U Back’을 보며 글램 록과 엑스 재팬 스타일의 ‘비주얼계’가 떠올랐고요. 평소에는 어떤 스타일을 선호하나요?

특별히 좋아하는 스타일이 따로 있는 건 아닙니다. 어떤 옷을 입느냐, 입지 않느냐보다 중요한 것은 자신감인 것 같아요. 어떤 옷을 입고 있건, 스스로 확신을 갖는 거죠. 늘 확신에 차 있다는 게 쉽지는 않아서, 저도 계속 노력하고 있습니다.

바로 오늘 ‘It’s Alright’의 뮤직비디오를 공개했습니다. 어떤 곡인지 간단하게 설명해줄 수 있나요?

2021년에 완성한 곡이에요. 그때 가장 많이 한 생각은 ‘어떤 여신에게 노래를 바친다면 어떨까?’였습니다. 이 곡을 듣는 모두가 신성해지는 듯한 기분을 느꼈으면 좋겠습니다.

‘It’s Alright’은 코첼라 무대의 오프닝곡이기도 했습니다. 무대 구성에서 어떤 부분에 가장 중점을 두었으며, 생애 첫 코첼라 공연을 무사히 마친 기분은 어떤가요?

‘It’s Alright’은 원래 코첼라 전에 공개하려던 곡이에요. 예상치 못한 상황이 발생해 일정을 미뤘지만, 그냥 오프닝곡으로 불러버렸죠. 세트리스트는 대부분 직관에 의존해 느낌 가는 대로 구성하는 편입니다. 코첼라 세트리스트는 말할 것도 없이 제 ‘역대 최애’고요. 제가 사랑하는 사람들에게 둘러싸여 있으니, 정말 축복받은 기분이 들더군요.

7월에는 후지 록 페스티벌 무대에 오릅니다. 하반기에는 가오슝을 시작으로 월드 투어에 돌입하고요. 남은 한 해의 계획은 어떤가요?

최대한 바쁘게 보냈으면 좋겠습니다. 열심히 일하고 싶어요. 바쁘다는 건 곧 축복이니까요.

‘Plastic Love’ 커버 영상이 아직까지 강렬하게 기억에 남아 있는 이유는 노래하는 당신의 모습이 너무 행복해 보였기 때문입니다. 음악이 직업이 된 지금도 곡을 만들고 노래를 부르는 게 즐겁나요?

그때 제가 행복해 보였나요?(웃음) 그때나 지금이나 사실 변한 건 아무것도 없습니다. 다만 카메라 앞에 서거나 공연을 할 때는 표정과 감정을 최대한 관리하는 편이에요. 오해하지 않았으면 좋겠습니다. 그런 모습도 결국 저라는 사람의 일부니까요. 저는 늘 진실한 모습을 보여주고 싶을 뿐이에요.

마지막 질문입니다. 아티스트로서, 한 인간으로서 도달하고자 하는 최종 목표는?

‘절대적인 사랑’ 그 자체가 되는 것, 그리고 누구나 ‘절대적인 사랑’이 될 수 있다는 사실을 세상 모두가 깨닫도록 돕는 것.

Japan’s biggest pop sensation, Fujii Kaze on ‘Supreme Love’

A little boy who used to upload cover videos on YouTube catches the attention of a major label, lands a contract, and a few years later sells out Tokyo Dome. This may sound like a cliché plot from a typical movie or drama, but in fact, this is the story of Fujii Kaze, who debuted in 2019 and has since risen to become one of Japan’s biggest pop stars. Blending jazz, R&B, soul, and traditional Japanese music with a sophisticated edge, Kaze recently stood on the stage of Coachella for the first time in his life. A few days ago, Kaze also announced that he will be performing at Gocheok Sky Dome next January 9th.

Fujii Kaze has always sung about love and hope. Whether it was a decade ago when he uploaded cover songs on youtube as a hobby, or now as he performs in front of tens of thousands, Kaze remarks that singing has always been an act of joy for him. Vogue sent over a list of questions to Kaze, who has been busy filming music videos and preparing for his world tour. In response, Kaze shared some thoughts that reflect what’s been going through his mind these days, along with photos (and captions that he wrote himself!) just for Vogue Korea.

Please briefly introduce yourself to our Vogue readers.

Annyeonghaseyo, my name is Fujii Kaze. I’m shy and awkward. I sing and meditate. If you want to know me, you can listen to my music anytime.

The first time I heard the name ‘Fujii Kaze,’ was back in 2019. I still remember the moment I first saw your YouTube cover of Mariya Takeuchi’s ‘Plastic Love’. Back then, I would have never imagined you to become one of Japan’s biggest pop stars. Did you always dream of becoming an artist?

Yes, I always had some ideas for songs, visuals, and a few words, and I just wanted to let them out and share them with the world. That’s why I started posting cover videos on YouTube, such as Plastic Love.

I’d like to ask the next question out of personal curiosity. May I ask why you haven’t deleted your pre-debut cover videos from your official YouTube channel? I would think most artists might want to remove them for management or branding reasons.

I’m super embarrassed by them, of course. Why are they still there? I secretly removed some of them tho, haha. But, including my manager, no one told me to delete it. If anything, they recommended keeping it. And now, those videos are kinda like a personal memory book for my parents and me.

Your music seems to be influenced from various genres including jazz, R&B, and soul. Watching your covers of music by idol groups like AKB48 or Arashi also gave me the impression that you approach music without bias.

I’ve always been curious about what attracts people and what they like, whether I like it or not. So when my classmates were obsessed with an idol group, I was trying to understand the hype. And after I started studying 80s hit songs (which I wasn’t very familiar with at that time), I casually fell in love with them.

In your recently released WBC soundtrack “My Place,” you collaborated with Puerto Rican producer, Tainy. You’ve also worked with a Korean producer, 250. Does your continued collaboration with international producers reflect your interest in exploring what kind of music resonates with the public?

I think I’m in the chapter where I collaborate with people from different cultures. I want to enrich my musical vocabulary, and experiment with my creativity.

If you had to name your favorite artist or genre, what would it be?

I remember being intrigued by Michael Jackson’s charisma and spirituality. I’ve loved pop music all my life. But influenced by my father, jazz remains one of my deepest roots. And from the first introduction, R&B/Soul music always has my heart.

It feels like your father was a great influence on your music. I understand he was also the one who encouraged you to start YouTube. What is the most important lesson you learned from him?

Always remember to stick to the Most High no matter what.

Let’s talk about your album ‘Prema’, released last year. Prema is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘Supreme Love’, or ‘Unconditional Love’. What does ‘Supreme Love’ mean to you?

Supreme Love is what I’m aiming to be. It is what I want you to feel when you listen to me, when you look at me. But it is a really long way to go, I sometimes feel I haven’t made any progress. But it’s a lifelong process and this album captures my 27 years of ebbs and flows.

What is the key message of the album?

We are love itself. We all can be supreme love itself. We all can at least strive to manifest the supreme love within ourselves. You can call it God, too.

While preparing for this interview, I read through your lyrics very carefully. Most of them seem to be about hope. Is there a reason you continue to hold onto hope even in such a chaotic world?

Notions such as “I am a part of God,” or “Everything happens under God’s perfect plan.”

You also put a lot of effort into visuals. The music videos for ‘Prema’ and ‘Hana’ were especially impressive. Watching ‘I Need U Back’ even reminded me of glam rock and the Visual Kei of X Japan. What kind of style do you personally prefer in your daily life?

I’d love to say, ‘confidence’ is my personal style. It doesn’t matter what I wear or don’t wear. I just put on confidence. It is not easy to maintain, so I’m striving to deepen it spiritually.

You just released the music video for ‘It’s Alright’ today. Could you briefly describe the song for us?

As always, I want you to feel the divinity within. When I wrote this song in 2021, I was thinking, “If I can offer a song for a Goddess, what kind of music would it be?”

‘It’s Alright’ was also the opening song for your Coachella performance. What was your focus in terms of stage production, and how does it feel to have successfully completed your first Coachella stage?

As some of you may have expected, this MV was supposed to be released before Coachella, but it wasn’t due to circumstances beyond my control. But we performed it anyway. I just follow my intuition when it comes to the setlist, and the one for Coachella? It’s my favorite ever. With my favorite people, I felt so blessed, man.

In July, you will be performing at Fuji Rock Festival, and in the second half of the year, you will begin your world tour starting in Kaohsiung. What are your other plans for the rest of the year?

I want it to be busy. I want to work hard. Being busy is a blessing for me right now, I think. I wish God use me ceaselessly.

The reason your ‘Plastic Love’ cover remains so memorable is that you looked incredibly happy while singing. Now that music has become your profession, do you still enjoy writing songs and performing?

Oh did I? haha I think nothing has changed. When I perform whether I’m in front of a camera or a person, I tend to manage my facial expressions or emotions. And don’t get me wrong, that is my authenticity and genuinity.

Final question: As an artist and as a person, what is your ultimate goal?

As I said before, to become a supreme love itself. And hopefully, you can actually see that and realize that you can be it, too.
